Highgate Pond, Hampstead Heath

Our drainage contractors in Hampstead Heath were instructed to locate the scour pipe outfall at the site of Highgate Pond in North London. The local authority suspected that the overflow pipe ran to a main sewer in Highgate Road, but this turned out not to be the case!

By attaching a trace and sonde device to an above ground locator, we tracked the 375mm cast iron pipe from the pond to Highgate Road, where it turned and continued. Following careful camerawork and research, we confirmed that the case iron pipe continued across Highgate Road and eventually ended up at Water Works Lane in Camden.

The pipe was one of the first water mains laid in the industrial era, and once upon a time, it supplied water to Camden Cattle Market.
